Spring and fall, particularly after periods of heavy rain that cool the water, are the most productive times to target these trout. Look for them in deeper pools and near submerged structure. A key tip: focus your efforts near the dam in Kankakee State Park, as this area tends to hold cooler water and attract trout. Wading can be challenging due to the rocky bottom and current, so consider using a wading staff. Browns here may not reach trophy sizes, but the chance to catch them in a northern Illinois river is a worthwhile pursuit.
