Northern Pike

The Kankakee River is a fantastic location for Northern Pike fishing. Its diverse structure, including weed beds, rocky shorelines, and submerged timber, creates ideal habitat for these ambush predators. Spring, just after ice-out, is prime time, as pike move into shallower areas to spawn. Fall, as the water cools, is another excellent period when pike actively feed to prepare for winter. Try targeting areas around the mouth of the Iroquois River where it meets the Kankakee, as this confluence often concentrates baitfish and, consequently, pike. A local tip: use large spinnerbaits or crankbaits retrieved quickly to trigger strikes. Pike in the Kankakee River can reach impressive sizes, with some exceeding 40 inches. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. Access to the river is available at several points within Kankakee State Park, offering both shoreline and boat fishing opportunities. Be aware of strong currents, especially after heavy rainfall.
