While not as widely known as other Illinois walleye hotspots, the Kankakee River near Kankakee, Illinois, holds a decent population of walleye that can provide for some exciting fishing. Focus your efforts on areas with current breaks, such as below dams or near bridge pilings. The stretch of river near the city's downtown area is a popular spot. Spring and fall are the most productive times, as walleye migrate upstream to spawn or seek refuge in deeper pools before winter. Try using jigs tipped with minnows or leeches, or cast crankbaits that imitate the local forage. The Kankakee River State Park offers several access points, including boat ramps, allowing you to explore different sections of the river. Be aware of the river's fluctuating levels, especially after rainfall. Local anglers often report success fishing at night using lighted bobbers and live bait. While the walleye may not be trophy-sized on average, their willingness to bite makes for an enjoyable experience.
