Brown Trout

If you're chasing brown trout in northern Minnesota, don't overlook the streams near Brooks. This area offers a more secluded, less pressured experience than some of the better-known trout waters further south. The key is to focus on the smaller, spring-fed creeks that flow into the larger rivers. These streams often hold surprisingly large browns, especially during the spring and fall when the water temperatures are cooler. Early morning and late evening are prime times. Access can be a bit challenging, requiring some bushwhacking, but the solitude is part of the appeal. Be sure to check local regulations regarding stream access and artificial lures only restrictions. A lightweight spinning rod or a 3-5 weight fly rod is perfect for these smaller waters. Look for undercut banks and submerged logs – classic brown trout holding spots.
