Brown Trout

While Burnsville isn't necessarily known as a trout mecca, the Vermillion River offers surprisingly good brown trout fishing opportunities close to the metro area. The Vermillion, a designated trout stream, is stocked annually, and some wild reproduction does occur. The best time to target browns here is in the spring (April-May) after the ice melts and during the fall (September-October) when water temperatures cool down. Focus on areas with good cover such as undercut banks, fallen logs, and deeper pools. A local tip: access is relatively easy at various points along the river, including near the Burnsville Parkway and along 140th Street. Be mindful of private property and respect posted signage. The Vermillion's browns aren't generally huge, averaging 10-14 inches, but they are feisty and offer a great chance to hone your skills in a more accessible setting. Consider using small spinners, nymphs, and dry flies to entice a strike. Remember to check the Minnesota DNR regulations for specific catch-and-release guidelines on the Vermillion River.
