Brown Trout

Cannon Falls is a sleeper for brown trout fishing in southeastern Minnesota. The Cannon River, particularly stretches with deeper pools and undercut banks, holds a decent population of browns. Unlike the stocked rainbows, these browns are often wild or holdovers, making them a rewarding challenge. The best time to target them is in the fall, as they become more active leading up to spawning. Low-light conditions, like early morning or late evening, are also productive. Try drifting nymphs or casting small spinners near structure. A key to success is stealth; brown trout are easily spooked in the clear water. Access can be found at several public access points along the Cannon River, but exploring some of the smaller, less-traveled tributaries can yield surprising results. Be prepared for a challenging but potentially rewarding experience.
