Brown Trout

While Chisholm, Minnesota, is more renowned for its bass and pike fishing, a few select streams and rivers in the surrounding area offer opportunities for Brown Trout. These are often smaller, lesser-known tributaries that require some exploration to find. Spring and fall are the best times to target browns, particularly after a period of rain when water levels are slightly elevated. Look for deep pools, undercut banks, and areas with plenty of cover. Small spinners and streamers are effective, as are nymph patterns when the fish are less active. Access to these streams can be limited, often requiring hiking or wading through dense vegetation. Be sure to obtain landowner permission if crossing private property. The brown trout in this area are generally wild fish, known for their beautiful coloration and challenging nature. Fish are typically smaller, in the 8-12 inch range, but the chance to catch a wild brown trout in a secluded setting is well worth the effort.
