Brown Trout

While not widely known as a trout destination, Chokio, Minnesota, offers some surprisingly good brown trout fishing in its local streams and rivers. The Pomme de Terre River and its tributaries, though smaller, hold populations of wild and occasionally stocked browns. These fish are often opportunistic feeders, making them receptive to a variety of presentations. Spring and fall are prime times, as water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Early morning and late evening are particularly productive. Access can be a bit challenging, as many areas are on private land, so be sure to respect property boundaries and seek permission where necessary. A good starting point is the public access point near the Highway 12 bridge. Look for deeper pools and undercut banks, as these areas provide cover for the trout. Don't be afraid to experiment with small spinners, dry flies, and nymphs to find what the fish are biting on that day. Remember, these brown trout can be wary, so stealth is key.
