While Columbia Heights itself doesn't offer prime brown trout fishing, you're within reasonable driving distance of some decent trout streams in southeastern Minnesota. The Vermillion River and the Whitewater River are both within a couple hours' drive and hold populations of wild and stocked brown trout. Spring and fall are the best times to target brown trout in these streams, with the cooler water temperatures triggering increased activity. Focus on areas with riffles, runs, and pools, and look for undercut banks and fallen logs that provide cover. A local tip is to check the Minnesota DNR's website for stocking reports and regulations specific to each stream. Also, be prepared for some wading, as many of the best spots are only accessible on foot. The brown trout in these streams typically range from 10-16 inches, but larger fish are possible. Remember to practice catch and release to help maintain the health of the fishery.
