While Coon Rapids isn't exactly known as a brown trout mecca, the Rum River, which flows through the area, does offer a limited but intriguing opportunity for anglers seeking browns. What sets the Rum apart is its unique blend of clear water and wooded banks, creating a more secluded feel than you might expect so close to the city. The Minnesota DNR stocks brown trout in certain sections of the Rum River, supplementing the naturally reproducing population. Spring and fall are the best times to target browns, particularly after a period of rain when the fish are more active. Try using small spinners or nymphs drifted through deeper pools and runs. Access to the river is available at several parks and public access points. Be sure to check the current regulations regarding catch-and-release and size limits, as these can vary. The brown trout in the Rum River are generally smaller, but catching one in an urban environment is a rewarding experience.
