Brown Trout

While not a prime trout destination, Fridley, Minnesota, does offer limited opportunities for brown trout in some of the smaller tributaries that feed into the Mississippi River. These streams are often overlooked but can hold surprisingly good-sized browns. The best time to target these fish is during the spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler. Look for areas with deep pools, undercut banks, and overhanging vegetation. Fly fishing with nymphs and dry flies can be effective, as can spin fishing with small spinners or spoons. A key local tip: these streams are often small and easily spooked, so approach with stealth and use light tackle. Access can be challenging, often requiring some hiking, but the reward of catching a wild brown trout close to the city is worth the effort.
