Brown Trout

While not as widely known as some other Minnesota locations, the streams near Greenwood can offer decent Brown Trout fishing opportunities. Focus your efforts on smaller, spring-fed creeks that maintain cool water temperatures throughout the year. These streams often support wild or stocked populations of browns. Spring and fall are the prime times, particularly after a rain event. A crucial local tip: many of these streams are small and easily spooked, so stealth is key. Approach the water quietly, wear drab clothing, and make long casts. Also, be mindful of private property – obtain permission before fishing on land that isn't clearly marked as public access. The brown trout in this area tend to be on the smaller side, averaging 8-14 inches, but they can be surprisingly challenging to catch, and the thrill of landing a wild brown in a secluded stream is hard to beat. Small spinners, dry flies, and nymphs are all effective depending on the conditions.
