Brown Trout

While not as widely known for Brown Trout as other regions, International Falls offers a unique opportunity to target these fish in select stretches of the Rainy River and its tributaries. These Browns are often wild fish, making them a prized catch. The best time to target them is during the spring and fall, when water temperatures are cooler. Look for areas with deeper pools, riffles, and undercut banks. A local tactic is to use small spinners or nymphs, drifting them naturally through likely holding spots. Access can be challenging in some areas, requiring some hiking and wading, but the reward of hooking a wild Brown Trout in this setting is well worth the effort. Be aware of local regulations regarding catch-and-release and gear restrictions, as some areas may have specific rules in place to protect the trout population. The Brown Trout in this area can be elusive but are often beautifully colored and provide a thrilling angling experience.
