Brown Trout

While Johnson, Minnesota, isn't typically known as a trout destination, some smaller streams and rivers in the surrounding area may hold populations of brown trout. These are often smaller, more intimate fisheries that require a bit of exploration to find productive water. Look for spring-fed creeks and rivers with good cover and riffle-pool sequences. These brown trout are not stocked and are often wild, so practice catch and release to help sustain the population. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target brown trout in these smaller streams. During the spring, look for trout to be actively feeding after the ice melts. In the fall, they'll be bulking up before winter. Small spinners, spoons, and dry flies can be effective. Be mindful of private property and obtain permission before accessing any streams that cross private land. These are not trophy waters, but offer a unique opportunity to target wild browns in a less-pressured environment. Remember to check the MN DNR regulations for specific stream regulations and seasons.
