Brown Trout

While Maple Plain isn't exactly a brown trout mecca, dedicated anglers can find some limited opportunities within a reasonable drive. The Crow River, specifically the South Fork, is stocked with brown trout and provides a chance to wet a line. Spring and fall are the optimal times to target these fish, as water temperatures are cooler and the trout are more active. Focus on sections of the river with deeper pools, undercut banks, and riffles. Small spinners, spoons, and nymph patterns are generally effective. A crucial tip: check the Minnesota DNR stocking reports before you go to see when and where the most recent stocking occurred. Also, be prepared for challenging conditions; the Crow River can be muddy and difficult to wade. Brown trout in this area aren't known for their size, but the chance to catch a wild or stocked trout close to the metro area makes it a worthwhile adventure for the dedicated angler. Remember to check for any special regulations specific to the Crow River.
