Brown Trout

If you're chasing brown trout in northern Minnesota, the Meadowlands area offers some surprisingly good opportunities. The Cloquet River and its tributaries are the main draw here, offering classic stream fishing for browns. What makes this area special is the relatively low fishing pressure compared to more well-known trout streams further south. Spring and fall are prime times, with the fish being most active during cooler water temperatures. Spring sees the mayfly hatches, while fall brings pre-spawn aggression. A local tip: Focus on areas with good cover, such as undercut banks and fallen logs. Also, be aware that water levels on the Cloquet can fluctuate, so check conditions before heading out. For access, look for public access points along County Road 4 or State Highway 33. The browns here aren't giants, but they're wild and plentiful, offering a rewarding experience for the fly angler.
