Brown Trout

While not widely known as a trout hotspot, the streams around Montevideo, Minnesota, do offer opportunities for brown trout, albeit on a smaller scale. The Chippewa River and some of its tributaries hold populations of wild and stocked browns. Spring and fall are the best times to target them, with cooler water temperatures triggering increased activity. Focus on sections with deep pools, undercut banks, and woody debris, as these provide cover for the trout. Access can be challenging in some areas due to thick vegetation, so be prepared to hike a bit. A good starting point is the public access along the Chippewa River near Watson. Remember to check the Minnesota DNR regulations for specific stream closures and size limits. Local anglers often have success with small spinners and dry flies that imitate local insects. Brown trout in this area tend to be on the smaller side, so using lighter tackle is recommended.
