Brown Trout

While not widely known as a trout hotspot, the Morgan, Minnesota area offers limited opportunities for brown trout fishing in some of the smaller tributaries of the Redwood River. These streams are often overlooked, which can translate to less fishing pressure. Spring and fall are the prime times to target browns as water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Look for deeper pools, undercut banks, and areas with overhanging vegetation – classic trout lies. Access to these streams can be challenging, often requiring permission from landowners or utilizing public access points where available. Be prepared to hike and explore. Fly fishing with small nymphs or dry flies is a popular method, but small spinners and spoons can also be effective. Don't expect trophy-sized browns here; the fish tend to be smaller, but the chance to catch wild trout in a less-pressured environment makes it a worthwhile pursuit. Check local regulations for specific stream closures and size/creel limits before heading out.
