Looking to tangle with some browns near Oak Park Heights? The St. Croix River offers some surprisingly good opportunities, especially during the spring and fall. While the St. Croix isn't necessarily known as a *premier* trout stream, it holds a decent population of browns, often overlooked by anglers targeting other species. Focus your efforts near submerged timber, rocky outcroppings, and deeper pools, especially where tributaries enter the main river. Early morning and late evening are prime times. Access can be a bit tricky; consider using the public access points at the St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park or the William O'Brien State Park further north and wading downstream. Be aware of water levels and currents, as the St. Croix can fluctuate significantly. Local tip: small crankbaits that mimic the river's forage fish can be highly effective, as can traditional fly fishing techniques with nymphs or streamers.
