Brown Trout

While not as widely known as some other Minnesota locations, the streams near Osakis can provide a surprising opportunity to target brown trout. The Sauk River watershed, which flows near Osakis, holds some decent populations of browns in its smaller tributaries. These streams are generally smaller and require a more finesse approach. Spring and fall are the best times to target these fish, with cooler water temperatures increasing their activity. Access can be a bit challenging, as many of these streams flow through private land, so be sure to obtain permission before fishing. A local tip: Focus on areas with good cover, such as undercut banks, overhanging vegetation, and fallen logs. The brown trout in these streams are typically smaller, but they are wild and beautiful. Consider using small spinners or fly fishing with dry flies and nymphs.
