Brown Trout

While not as widely known as some other Minnesota destinations, Ranier offers some opportunities for brown trout fishing. The key is targeting the cooler, more oxygenated tributaries that feed into the Rainy River. These streams, though often smaller in size, can hold surprisingly large browns, especially during the spring and fall migrations. Look for areas with undercut banks, fallen logs, and riffles, which provide cover and feeding lanes for the trout. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, before the water freezes, are generally the best times. A local's secret is to use small spinners or spoons in these streams, mimicking the local baitfish. Be mindful of private property along the stream banks and always obtain permission before accessing the water. Wading can be challenging in some sections due to slippery rocks, so wear appropriate footwear.
