Brown Trout

While not widely known as a trout destination, Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota, and its surrounding tributaries offer a unique opportunity to target brown trout. The St. Louis River, which feeds into and out of Sturgeon Lake, holds a population of these fish, especially in its upper reaches. Spring and fall are the best times to fish for browns, as they become more active in cooler water temperatures. Focus your efforts on the river sections with good current and structure, such as fallen logs and undercut banks. Fly fishing with streamers or nymphs can be productive, as can casting small spinners or spoons. A key tip: Obtain a detailed map of the St. Louis River watershed, as access can be limited in certain areas. Respect private property and be prepared to hike. While the brown trout in this area may not be trophy-sized, the challenge of finding and catching them in this environment makes for a rewarding experience.
