Brown Trout

While Wahkon, Minnesota, is better known for its walleye and panfish opportunities on Mille Lacs Lake, dedicated anglers can find some surprisingly good brown trout fishing in the nearby streams and rivers that feed into the lake. These tributaries, often overlooked, can hold decent numbers of browns, especially during the spring and fall spawning runs. Look for cooler, well-oxygenated water, and focus on areas with undercut banks, fallen logs, and deep pools. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are prime times, as the trout become more active with the cooler water temperatures. A local tip: accessing some of these streams requires navigating private land, so always obtain permission beforehand. Also, be prepared for smaller streams – lightweight spinning gear or a fly rod are ideal. The brown trout here aren't giants, but the chance to target them in a less-pressured environment makes for a rewarding experience.
