Brown Trout

Brown trout enthusiasts will find opportunities near Valier, Montana, though it requires a bit of exploration beyond Lake Frances itself. While the lake does hold some browns, the real potential lies in the Marias River system. This river, and its tributaries, offers classic Montana trout fishing. Spring and fall are the best times to target browns, as they become more active during these periods, staging for spawning. Access can be a challenge, with some stretches requiring permission from landowners. However, public access points exist along Highway 44. Wading is the most common method, and fly fishing with streamers or nymphs is highly effective. The brown trout in this area tend to be wild and can be quite selective, so be prepared to experiment with your presentation. Look for deeper pools and undercut banks, as these are prime holding areas.
