If you're looking to tangle with some walleye in Montana, consider a trip to Valier. Lake Frances, a reservoir just outside of town, is the main draw. This lake offers good walleye habitat, with plenty of submerged structure and varying depths. Spring and fall are prime times, as the walleye are more active in cooler water temperatures. Focus on areas near the dam or along the old creek channels. A good starting point is the Valier City Park, which provides excellent access to the lake and has a boat ramp. Be aware that Lake Frances can experience significant wind, so check the forecast before heading out. Local anglers often have success trolling crankbaits or jigging with minnows near structure. The walleye here aren't known to be huge, but there's a healthy population, offering consistent action for anglers of all skill levels.
