While Runnemede itself isn't a brown trout hotspot, accessing quality brown trout fishing requires a bit of a drive north or west into the more mountainous regions of New Jersey. The Pequest River, the South Branch of the Raritan River, and the Musconetcong River are all within a reasonable driving distance and offer excellent opportunities for targeting brown trout. Spring and fall are the optimal times, particularly during the stocking season in spring and the pre-spawn period in the fall. Focus on areas with riffles, runs, and pools, and be prepared to use a variety of techniques, from fly fishing to spin fishing. A crucial local tip is to check the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife's trout stocking schedule before planning your trip. Also, be mindful of catch-and-release regulations on certain sections of these rivers. The brown trout in these waters can be quite wary, so stealth and presentation are key to success. Expect to find a mix of stocked and holdover fish, with the potential for some truly impressive specimens.
