For smallmouth bass near Runnemede, NJ, venturing to the Delaware River is your best bet. While not directly in Runnemede, the Delaware offers the most consistent smallmouth fishing in the region. Focus on areas with rocky structure, current breaks, and submerged timber. The stretch between Trenton and the Delaware Water Gap is particularly productive. Summer and fall are prime times. As the water warms, smallmouth become more active, and the fall brings aggressive feeding as they prepare for winter. A practical tip is to use a drift boat or kayak to access more remote sections of the river. Also, be aware of changing water levels and current conditions, especially after heavy rains. The smallmouth in the Delaware can be incredibly strong fighters, so be prepared for a battle. Expect to find a healthy population of smallmouth, with the potential for some trophy-sized fish.
