Brown Trout

If you're chasing brown trout in Southern Oregon, Cave Junction offers a less crowded, more intimate experience than some of the state's better-known fisheries. The East Fork Illinois River and its tributaries are the primary draw here, holding wild and holdover browns in a classic riffle-pool structure. Spring and fall are prime times; target the pre-spawn and post-spawn periods for aggressive feeding. Summer can be productive too, especially with terrestrials like hoppers and beetles. A key to success here is stealth. The water can be clear, so use long leaders and light tippets. Access can be challenging in some areas, but the reward is worth it. Look for public access points along Highway 46, and be prepared for some hiking. Remember that the East Fork Illinois River is subject to low flows in late summer, so check conditions before you go. The browns here aren't generally huge, but they are beautiful, wild fish that will test your skills.
