Carp

If you're chasing carp in eastern Tennessee, Cleveland offers some surprisingly productive freshwater opportunities. The Hiwassee River, with its slower-moving sections and weedy banks near town, is a great place to start. Chickamauga Lake, a short drive away, also holds a healthy population of carp, particularly around shallow, grassy areas and near creek mouths. Spring and early summer are prime times, as the carp move into shallower water to spawn. Chumming with corn or boilies a few days before your trip can significantly improve your chances. For river access, check out the public access points along the Hiwassee, but be aware that water levels can fluctuate. A local tip: many anglers have success using hair rigs with sweet corn or flavored dough baits. The carp here can be surprisingly wary, so a stealthy approach is key.
