Channel Catfish

Targeting channel catfish around Loma Linda, Missouri, means exploring the smaller rivers, creeks, and ponds that dot the landscape. While the bigger lakes get more attention, these smaller waterways often hold surprisingly large catfish. The spring and early summer months are excellent, particularly after a good rain that raises water levels and washes food into the system. Focus on areas with current breaks, such as the downstream side of fallen trees or near bridge pilings. Night fishing can be particularly productive. Use simple but effective baits like nightcrawlers, cut bait (shad or bluegill are good choices), or commercially prepared stink baits. Access can be tricky in some areas, so be prepared to do some walking to find the best spots. Always respect private property and obtain permission before fishing on private land. A sturdy rod and reel are recommended, as you never know when you might hook into a true heavyweight.
