Channel Catfish

If you're heading to Taneyville, Missouri with channel cats on your mind, you're in for a treat. This area is dotted with smaller lakes and the headwaters of several Ozark streams that hold surprisingly large catfish. The James River arm of Table Rock Lake is also relatively close and offers excellent catfishing opportunities. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, are prime times, but don't overlook late summer evenings when the cats are actively feeding. For bank access, try the public areas along the Finley River; many offer easy walking and good casting spots. Nightcrawlers, prepared baits, and cut bait are all effective here. Be aware that water levels in the smaller streams can fluctuate rapidly after heavy rains, so check local conditions before you head out.
