Channel Catfish

Wheatland, Missouri, offers some fantastic channel catfish action, especially in Pomme de Terre Lake and the surrounding rivers. Pomme de Terre is known for its healthy population of channel cats, with plenty of opportunities to catch both eater-sized fish and larger specimens. The best time to target channel catfish here is during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. After the spawn in late spring, catfish are actively feeding. Look for them in deeper holes and channels, especially near structure like submerged timber or rocky points. Chicken liver, nightcrawlers, and prepared catfish baits are all effective. A good local tip is to fish at night, especially during the summer heat, as catfish are more active then. Also, be aware of the lake's regulations regarding size and creel limits for catfish.
