Rainbow Trout

While not as widely known for trout as some other Missouri locations, Wheatland offers a unique opportunity to target rainbow trout in the colder months. The Pomme de Terre Lake tailwater below the dam is stocked with rainbow trout periodically throughout the fall and winter. This creates a seasonal fishery that can provide some excellent action. The best time to fish for trout here is from late fall through early spring, when water temperatures are cooler. Small spinners, spoons, and flies are all effective. A local tip is to check the stocking reports from the Missouri Department of Conservation to know when the latest stocking occurred. Also, be aware of the specific regulations for the tailwater area, including any gear restrictions or special catch-and-release zones. Access to the tailwater is relatively easy, with parking available near the dam.
