Channel Catfish

Channel catfish in the Rio Hondo region are a readily available target for anglers of all skill levels. The canals and resacas branching from the Rio Grande provide ample habitat for these whiskered fish. Warmer months, from late spring through summer, are the most productive times to fish for channel cats. They are opportunistic feeders, so a variety of baits can work well. Prepared stink baits, nightcrawlers, and cut bait are all popular choices. Look for deeper holes and areas with structure, such as submerged logs or riprap along the canal banks. Fishing at night can be particularly rewarding, as catfish are often more active under the cover of darkness. Public access points are available along some of the canals, making it easy to find a spot to fish. Be mindful of the local vegetation, as it can be thick in some areas.
