If you're aiming for slab-sized crappie in southeast Georgia, the waterways around Hoboken offer some promising opportunities. The Satilla River and its backwaters are prime crappie habitat, particularly during the pre-spawn and spawn periods in late winter and early spring (February-April). Focus your efforts on submerged structure like fallen trees, brush piles, and creek mouths where crappie congregate. Later in the year, try fishing deeper holes and around bridge pilings. A local tip: the Highway 84 bridge crossing the Satilla provides bank access and can be productive. Minnows and small jigs are your best bet. Be mindful of water levels, as the Satilla can fluctuate rapidly after heavy rains, impacting fishing conditions. The crappie here tend to be good-sized, with some reaching over two pounds.
