Spring is the peak season, as crappie move into the shallows to spawn, but fall can also be productive as they fatten up for the winter. Focus on areas with submerged structure, such as brush piles, fallen trees, and cypress knees. Fishing around the edges of canals and bayous can also be rewarding. A good starting point is the boat launch at Belle River, providing easy access to several productive crappie spots. Locals often use minnows or jigs suspended under a cork, adjusting the depth until they find the fish. The crappie in this area are known for being relatively large, with some slabs reaching well over two pounds. Keep an eye on water clarity, as crappie tend to prefer slightly stained water. Also, be prepared for changing water levels, especially after heavy rains.
