Crappie

Crappie fishing near Sulphur, Louisiana, is best pursued in the freshwater areas of the Calcasieu River system and nearby lakes. While not as famous as other crappie hotspots, these waters offer a solid crappie population and less fishing pressure. The springtime crappie spawn (March-April) is the most productive time, when crappie congregate in shallow water near structure. Look for submerged brush piles, fallen trees, and creek channels. Minnows and small jigs are the go-to baits. A local tip: Many of the crappie hang out near the I-10 bridge pilings. Exercise caution fishing near the bridge and be aware of boat traffic. Public access is available at several boat ramps along the Calcasieu River. The crappie in this region are generally good-sized, and a limit can make for a tasty fish fry.
