If you're looking for some slab-sided crappie action, Geneva, NY, and the surrounding Finger Lakes region offer excellent opportunities. Seneca Lake, in particular, is known for its healthy crappie population. The best time to target them here is during the pre-spawn (late April-early May) when they move into shallower weedy areas and around docks to prepare for spawning. Trolling small jigs or using live minnows under a bobber are both productive techniques. As the water warms, focus on deeper structure near creek mouths or submerged timber. A local tip: try fishing the north end of the lake near the city's pier and harbor; it's easily accessible and often holds crappie. Another key to success is understanding Seneca Lake's thermocline during the summer months, as crappie will often suspend just above it.
