While not typically known as a crappie destination, Fontenelle Reservoir, just north of town, holds a decent population of these panfish. The reservoir’s fluctuating water levels can concentrate crappie around submerged structure, making it key to locate these areas. The best time to target crappie here is during the spring spawn (late May-June) when they move into shallower bays to reproduce. Fish near submerged timber or weed beds in 5-10 feet of water using small jigs or minnows under a bobber. Another productive period is late summer/early fall as the water cools. A local tip: check the Wyoming Game and Fish Department website for the latest creel limits and water level information before you go. Access is easy via the Fontenelle Dam and several boat ramps along the reservoir's perimeter.
