Dolly Varden

The numerous streams and rivers surrounding Sitka provide excellent Dolly Varden fishing opportunities. Similar to other Alaskan locations, the late summer and early fall, when salmon are spawning, is the peak season. The Dollies follow the salmon, feeding heavily on their eggs and flesh. Focus your efforts on the clearwater tributaries and outlets of larger systems. Fly fishing with egg patterns or small streamers is highly effective. Be prepared to adjust your tactics based on water conditions and the presence of salmon. A valuable local tip is to explore some of the smaller, less-known streams accessible by boat or float plane; these can often hold larger, less pressured fish. The Dolly Varden in the Sitka area are known for their relatively large size, with some specimens reaching impressive lengths. Remember to practice catch and release to help sustain this valuable fishery.
