Finetooth Shark

Various

The Finetooth Shark is a slender, fast-swimming shark species inhabiting coastal waters, prized by anglers for its accessible size and willingness to take a variety of baits and lures. Found primarily in the western Atlantic Ocean, from North Carolina to Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico, they offer a fun challenge for light tackle enthusiasts. While not a massive shark, their energetic fights and acrobatic leaps make them a thrilling catch, especially for kayak anglers or those fishing from smaller boats. Coastal areas near Hatteras, NC, and the Florida Keys are renowned for Finetooth Shark fishing.

Finetooth Shark Fishing in Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale offers some exciting opportunities to tangle with Finetooth Sharks, especially if you're comfortable fishing from a boat. These sharks are common in the nearshore waters and inlets along the coast. The best time to target them is during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall, when they move closer to shore to feed. Look for them around structure like reefs and wrecks, or even patrolling the edges of channels. Trolling live baitfish or drifting cut bait are effective methods. A local tip: Many anglers launch from the 15th Street Fisheries dock and head just offshore. Remember to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. Be mindful of local regulations regarding shark fishing, including size and gear restrictions. The Finetooth population here is generally healthy, offering a fun, accessible shark fishing experience without venturing too far from shore.
