Flounder

Hunting for Flounder around Ocean Springs can be a rewarding experience, especially if you enjoy sight fishing or targeting ambush predators. These flatfish are common in the shallow, sandy-bottomed areas of the bayous and along the edges of grass flats. Fall is prime time, as flounder migrate towards the Gulf for spawning. During this time, they are aggressively feeding and more easily targeted. Focus on areas with good tidal flow and structure, such as docks, piers, and oyster reefs. A local tactic is to use a slow-retrieved jig head with a soft plastic trailer, bumping it along the bottom. Also, consider wading the flats at low tide to spot flounder and cast to them directly. The Davis Bayou area within Gulf Islands National Seashore provides excellent wading access, just be mindful of the oyster shells.
