Flounder

Holden Beach is a fantastic destination for flounder fishing, especially if you're targeting the tasty Southern Flounder. The shallow, sandy bottom of the Intracoastal Waterway and the adjacent inlets provide ideal habitat. The fall months, from September to November, are particularly productive as flounder migrate out of the creeks and bays. Drifting along the bottom with live bait, such as mud minnows or finger mullet, is a classic and effective technique. Focus your efforts around docks, bridge pilings, and any areas with structure that might hold baitfish. A Carolina rig with a short leader is a good choice for presenting your bait. Be aware of the strong currents in the inlets, and adjust your weight accordingly to maintain bottom contact. The boat ramp at the end of Jordan Boulevard offers convenient access to the ICW. Local flounder are known to be ambush predators, so a slow, deliberate presentation is often key to success.
