Flounder

North Topsail Beach is a fantastic location to target Flounder, with the warmer months (May through September) being the most productive. These flatfish are commonly found in the backwaters, creeks, and around the inlets. The Intracoastal Waterway and the areas around docks and piers offer excellent ambush points for Flounder. A popular technique is drifting live bait, such as mud minnows or small mullet, along the bottom. You can also try casting soft plastic lures, like Gulp! shrimp, on a jig head. Focus on areas with structure or slight depth changes. A local tip: pay attention to the tide. Flounder often move with the tide, so positioning yourself where they're likely to be moving is key. The Stump Sound boat ramp provides good access to the Intracoastal Waterway, but can get crowded during weekends.
