Sheepshead

Sheepshead, known for their distinctive teeth and fondness for crustaceans, are a popular target around North Topsail Beach. The best time to target them is during the spring and fall, when water temperatures are moderate. Focus your efforts around docks, bridges, and pilings – anywhere with barnacle growth. These fish are notorious bait stealers, so a small, sharp hook and a stealthy presentation are crucial. Fiddler crabs are the bait of choice for many local anglers, but shrimp and clams also work well. Fish vertically, dropping your bait right next to the structure. A local tip is to use a very short leader to minimize the chance of the Sheepshead biting through your line. The Surf City Pier and the pilings under the high-rise bridge offer easily accessible fishing spots, but be prepared to deal with other anglers and boat traffic.
