Flounder

If you're targeting Flounder around Sunset Beach, you're in a prime location. The shallow, sandy bottom of the Intracoastal Waterway and nearby inlets provides excellent habitat for these flatfish. Flounder are masters of camouflage, so focus your efforts near structure like docks, bridge pilings, and channel edges. The best time to target them is during the warmer months, particularly spring and fall, when they are actively feeding. Live bait, such as mud minnows or small finger mullet, is incredibly effective. Slowly dragging a Carolina rig along the bottom is a proven technique. A local tip: the Calabash River is known for holding flounder, especially near the oyster beds. Be aware of the strong tidal currents in this area. Remember, flounder often bury themselves in the sand, so a slow, deliberate presentation is key to enticing a strike.
