Hake

Narragansett Bay and the surrounding waters off Rhode Island offer a solid hake fishery, particularly during the colder months. As water temperatures drop, hake move closer to shore in search of food. Look for them near structure like wrecks and rocky bottoms. Winter is prime time, though early spring can still produce. Consider launching from Galilee, a major fishing port in South County, to access productive offshore grounds. Jigging with heavy metal jigs or using baited hooks with squid or clams are effective techniques. Be prepared for deep water fishing, often in excess of 100 feet. The hake in this area are known to be aggressive feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different presentations. Check local regulations regarding size and bag limits before heading out.
