Halibut

If you're targeting halibut out of Eureka, California, you're in a prime location for some serious flatties. The waters surrounding Humboldt Bay and the nearshore ocean offer excellent habitat. Focus your efforts on areas where the bottom transitions from sandy to muddy, as these zones tend to hold more forage. Spring and early summer are typically the best times, as halibut migrate closer to shore to feed. Keep a close eye on water clarity – halibut prefer relatively clear water. A local tip: launch out of Woodley Island Marina for easy access to both the bay and the ocean. When the tide is running, be prepared to use heavier weights to keep your bait on the bottom.
