Hybrid Striped Bass

Gunnison, Mississippi, might not be the first place that springs to mind for Hybrid Striped Bass, but the area's proximity to the Mississippi River and its associated oxbow lakes creates a unique situation. These hybrids, often stocked in nearby reservoirs, sometimes find their way into the river system, providing a thrilling surprise for anglers. The best time to target them is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, when they are more active and the water temperatures are lower. Focus your efforts on areas with current, such as the mouths of creeks entering larger bodies of water or near any structures that create eddies. Large swimbaits, crankbaits, and sassy shad-type lures are effective. A good local tip is to pay attention to bird activity; diving birds often indicate schools of baitfish, and the hybrids won't be far behind. Be prepared for a strong fight, as these fish are known for their power. Access to the river and backwaters is available via several public boat ramps along Highway 1.
