Looking to tangle with some White Bass in Mississippi? Gunnison, located near the Mississippi River Delta, offers some surprisingly good opportunities. While the main river itself can be challenging, focus on the backwater areas, oxbow lakes, and connecting sloughs. These areas hold good numbers of White Bass, especially during their spring spawning runs. Prime time is typically late February through April, when the water temperatures start to rise. They move into shallower water to spawn, making them more accessible to bank fishermen and those with small boats. A key tactic is to locate areas where feeder creeks enter the backwaters, as these tend to concentrate the fish. Target them with small crankbaits, spinners, or even live minnows. Be aware that river levels can fluctuate dramatically, so check conditions before heading out. A small boat or kayak is highly recommended for accessing the best spots, launching from any of the public access points along Highway 1.
